Tech Lighting troubleshooting tips

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Here are the places on a Monorail lighting system we should trouble shoot first:

1- Check dimmer being used. Magnetic low voltage transformer must be dimmed by magnetic low voltage dimmer.
Electronic low voltage transformer must be dimmed by an electronic low voltage dimmer.

Take the dimmer out of the equation and control with on/off switch to see if the dimmer is causing a problem.

If so, replace dimmer.

2- Retighten all allen screw connections, don’t forget the largest one at the bottom of power connector.

Leave system on for 30 minutes, then check all connections for heat build-up

3- Disconnect all fixtures (either by taking down or loosen until no contact).

Reset transformer.

Reconnect fixtures one at a time.

If one or more fixtures cause the transformer breaker to trip, correct fixture problem (incorrect installation of Freejack connection when shortening is common).

4- Have electrician test the transformer to make sure 12 volt output (must be tested with a voltage tester that has the ability to test for 12 volts).

Additional chain and wire for designers fountain pendant light and chandelier

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I just received my order for 2 lamps: Designers Fountain Stratton Transitional Chandelier - DF-98086-WM and Designers Fountain Stratton Transitional Inverted Pendant Light - DF-98031-WM. I opened the inverted pendant light box (DF-98031-WM) and found that the hanging chain was only 3 ft or less. The electrical wire was at least 12 ft. I need a 6 ft chain to install. I looked around at Home Depot to find a chain, but I couldn’t find anything even close to the color/style. I haven’t opened the other chandelier box (DF 98086-WM) yet, as I’m afraid that the chain may also be too short. Can you let me know if you can send me a longer chain (6 ft) that matches my lighting fixtures?

Answer: Designers Fountains default chain length is 3′ with 10′ of wire. In order to order more chain, you have to call in. The chain model number is CHNWML8G and the cost per foot is $2.97 plus $5 shipping and handling. Please advise back either by phone or email with the requested amount of chain. You can link the additional chain to the existing chain you have.

Looking for a ceiling fan light kit with 4″ fitting

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I’m in need of a 4″ fitting lamp shade for a ceiling fan. What size is the fitting on Meyda Tiffany Iris Ceiling Fan Light Shade - MD-27483? Or do you have other shades of that size? Thanks for any help that you can give me!

Answer: We were told that this ceiling fan light kit from Meyda Tiffany has a 2″ fitting. Because this shade is small they could not accommodate it with a 4″ fitting ring. We do not see any glass that accomodates 4″ fitting. We have looked through Craftmade’s glass and their glass is 2.25″. We have learned that two and a quarter is actually the standard fitting size. Hope this helps.

Inquiry regarding recessed lighting fixture

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Right now I have puck lighting on my low ceiling with remote transformer. I want to replace them with shallow recessed lighting like LBL Lighting Optika 3” Shallow Low-Voltage Halogen Recessed Lighting Housing - R3-050. I do have a 4 ” clearance. What exactly do I need to complete a fixture. Do they have compatible decorative glass trims? I am interested in the smaller sized (3″ wide) Thank you.

Answer: You will need to purchase the housing that corresponds with the recessed light that you need. Also, there are trims that you can choose from depending on the recessed light that you choose. First, you will need to look at the housing that you need, I assume this is not a new construction as you are replacing pucks so you will need a “remodel housing” you will also need to choose between IC (insulated ceiling) as the IC housing is rated for direct contact with insulation and combustive materials. If this does not apply to your situation, that you can use standard housing. Another thing to consider is if you are going to use compact fluorescent lighting, incandescent, or low voltage? Also, how many recessed lights will you be implementing? Hope this helps.
