As ELK Lighting prepares to enter its 28th year in business, I remain in awe and am rewarded to be part of this special company for the past seven years, a company comprised of people proud of their accomplishments and excited about the future.
We have stuck to our strategy to focus on you (our customer), seeing our business and the services we provide from your perspective. Although the last few years have been a challenge for all of us, we have committed ourselves to be a reliable source, a trusted partner and a progressive company dedicated to delivering a great value – all when it was needed the most.
In 2010, we intensified our commitment to deliver an even greater product selection. ELK and Landmark had a combined released of over 500 new items with fashion forward design elements in a variety of price-points. Doing so expanded your potential target market of consumers, while maintaining our identity as a quality brand with compelling values.
Our newly formed company, Dimond received instant acceptance allowing us to launch over 300 new lamps and mirrors throughout the year. The designs and price points proved to be a valued addition to many of your businesses when consumers were searching for alternatives to entire room remodeling projects.
Recently, we were pleased to announce the addition of Sterling Industries to our family of companies. This well known veteran in the furniture industry introduced exciting new categories to our company -furniture and accessories, while greatly expanding our offering in lamps and mirrors. We believe these additional categories will make us a more comprehensive design solution provider which in turn widens merchandising options and incremental sales growth opportunities for your business.
As we enter 2011 we will continue to find new ways to innovate and expand while keeping paramount in our minds the importance of delivering our shared corporate values of being a relationship-centric organization.
With heartfelt appreciation, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season and prosperous and fulfilling New Year.
Sincerely,
Bradford Smith
Chief Executive Officer – E.L.K. Lighting Group

Light can be the most important decorating element, creating warmth that makes a space feel like home. As the holidays fast approach, we are spending more time celebrating with family and friends. We are usually attending as well as hosting many of our own parties. The right lighting determines the atmosphere in your home. It can relax or invigorate the atmosphere and can also just add a decorative holiday touch.
Many people concentrate on decorating their home on the inside for the holidays. There are simple jobs that can create a very appealing and grand entrance for the outside of your home. The simple projects of painting your door, changing the door hardware or adding a festive door mat can create a more inviting entry way to your home. To highlight these changes to the front of your home, don’t forget to change your outdoor lighting fixtures. These simple changes will make the exterior of your home more inviting for your holiday guests.
Lighting is the single most effective element in decorating, dramatically improving the look and feel of any room. Gentle lighting from several sources can accent as well as create a comfortable atmosphere. Ambient lighting is used to enhance focal points and even create a festive and artistic feel in a room. Ambient lighting can be created through specific placement of table and floor lamps which will create a comforting effect that is both relaxing and interesting. In contrast, bold lighting will bring out the rich dramatic colors used in the decor. It will draw your attention to the brightly lit areas where family and friends will gather. The general illumination of a room can strongly influence the mood of a room from bright and festive to more intimate and romantic. The simplest things can have the most profound effect on us and how we view our home. Decorate and celebrate the holidays with lighting.
Here are some holiday lighting ideas: Decorations may be a fire hazard if not installed properly – be sure to keep all decorations away from exposed bulbs on light fixtures.
- Wrap your chandelier arms with garland or gold ribbon and Christmas lights
- Use low wattage “flicker flame” colored bulbs
- Tie tiny ribbon bows on the arms of the chandelier
- Hang Christmas ornaments (colored balls, gold tassels, stars) from your wall sconces and chandeliers using holiday ribbon
- Add crystals to chandeliers, sconces and even table and floor lamps to reflect light
- Change your chandelier shades for the holidays. Wrap existing shades in wrapping paper or foil paper and tie them with a ribbon

- Best Buys in outdoor lighting were selected based on design, durability, ease of installation and warranty.
- Fixtures that are designed primarily for security were not evaluated, because Consumers Digest covers products as part of a feature on home-security products.
- Entry lighting refers to wall- and ceiling mounted fixtures. Utility lighting fixtures includes outdoor wall lights, outdoor flood lights, outdoor step lights and outdoor deck lights for residential use.
- All Best Buys in entry and post-mounted lighting have a 1-year warranty. All Best Buys in entry and post-mounted lighting can be upgraded to use GU24 bases, which are designed to use new light-emitting-diode (LED) and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. The extra price that you’ll pay for such an upgrade will vary depending on the manufacturer.
- MSRP and features for entry and post-mounted Best Buys selections represent the best value for a wall-mounted entry light in that series. MSRP and features for utility lights represent the model that has the best value in a series.
- Best Price is a reflection of the lowest retail price that was available at press time and is subject to change.
ENTRY & POST MOUNTED LIGHTING
Hinkley Lighting Harbor Transitional Outdoor Wall Sconce – Large – HK-2575-AR (MSRP $450; Best Price: $318)
No outdoor lighting series that uses solid-brass construction has more fixture choices than the Harbor Series does. It’s the least expensive line that is in this category that allows you to but a path light model for landscaping that’s made with the same style as the flush mount ceiling light, pendant light and wall mounted fixtures. As a result, you can have the same lighting style for all of your outdoor lights. Dark-sky compliant fixtures in this series cost an average of $50 extra. The Saturn Collection ($420), which comes in stainless steel, is also a Best Buy.
Features:
Dimensions: 16.25″ (H) x 11″ (W) x 11.75″ (D)
Bulb: (1) 100W incandescent lamp
Available finishes: Bronze, Titanium
Sea Gull Lighting Hermitage Transitional Outdoor Wall Sconce – SG-88083 (MSRP: $299; Best Price: $272)
The Hermitage Collection is one of the least expensive lines that we found that has solid brass as its standard fixture material. (The durability of Brass is desirable for outdoor lighting fixtures). The series is available in pendant light, post lantern light and wall-mounted styles. It’s also the least expensive solid-brass fixture that we could find that can be upgraded to a GU24 base.
Features:
Dimensions: 19.75″ (H) x 11″ (W) x 123.75″ (D)
Bulbs: (3) 40W candelabra base
Available finishes: Antique Bronze, Brushed Nickel
Maxim Lighting Knob Hill DC Traditional Outdoor Wall Sconce – MX-3465-CD-SE (MSRP: $129; Best Price: $122)
The Knob Hill series is the least expensive line that we found that offers two fixture-material options: cast aluminum, which is the standard material; and Vivex, which is a noncorrosive composite material that is better suited for those who live near saltwater. You can expect to pay about $60 extra for the Vivex fixture, which comes with a 3-year warranty. Five other series that have a different appearance, Carriage House ($131), Dover ($116), Morrow Bay ($131), Santa Barbara ($112) and Whittier ($188), are also Best Buys.
Features:
Dimensions: 24.5″ (H), 10″ (W) x 14 x 5″ (D)
Bulbs: (3) 60W candelabra base
Available finish: Sienna (brown)
