2012 is the year to experiment with your interior! More homeowners are thinking of bold, alternative ways to decorate their homes. Today we’ll be sharing rooms that are a little bit gritty, and a little bit glamorous. As always, there are lovely light fixtures that compliment these interiors.

The sparse, industrial layout of this loft is surprisingly chic and glamorous. The bold pink accents and lush velvet textiles contrast beautifully with the bare, distressed wood floors and metal stairs.

A heavy, rustic metal cabinet may not be the first thing you think to use for storage in your bathroom, but this lovely all-white room is spacious and eclectic enough for such an unexpected piece of furniture. The crisp white floorboards and subway tiles are a chic contrast to the aged cabinet.

An interesting collection of well-worn hardware furniture becomes modern and glam in this dining room, showcasing eclectic artwork and stunning d.i.y pendant lights.

This awesome industrial space turned artsy living space is fun and colorful. The streamline modern furniture help soften the rough edges of this former garage. Expansive windows and brilliant accent lighting make the space feel especially glamorous.

An all-white modern living room feels particularly glam thanks to plenty of open space and natural light. The subtle industrial touches, exposed brick walls, rough wooden accents, and wall sconce make the space feel surprisingly cozy.

Pink and grey is a beautiful color combination, especially if you’re going for a feminine, modern feel. The bed frame is made from scaffolding and the chain mail chandelier is an edgy accent piece, as well.

I love this aircraft hanger turned modern home looks really chic and cool with the arched metal roofing. Cozy textiles and squishy throw pillows help this very industrial space feel more like a home.

These vintage metal chairs fit right in with the open layout of this dining room. The warm tones of the wood flooring and table are a stark, yet beautiful contrast to the polished metal and industrial lighting.

When it comes to following decorating trends, light fixtures such as lamps are a great choice. This is because lamp bases, even those in trendy styles, are relatively affordable and thus, easy to swap out on a whim. Furthermore, lamps are a ‘must have’ for a plethora of spaces including bedrooms and living rooms, so it’s never a waste of money to invest in a few. In 2012, expect to see plenty of lamp bases that feature mirror finishes.

Previously, the mirror was restricted to the wall: typically at the foyer or entrance of the home, but also over beds, fireplaces and as a focal point in various rooms throughout the home. Today, the mirror has spread from the wall to furniture and now to light fixtures. With this in mind, don’t be afraid to mix your mirrored lamps and light fixtures with other mirrored pieces: mirror finish side tables, small stools, vases and so forth.
Trendy Looks: Mirror Finish Lamp Bases

One of the trendiest looks for the mirror or silver finished lamp base is the large single sphere. This particular shape and style tends to compliment pendant lights and a plethora of interior design styles including contemporary, modern and traditional. Plus, this particular style can also be mixed with other light fixtures that feature a similar look.

Another popular look is the stacked spheres, typically consisting of three spheres but this look can also consist of as many as 7 stacked spheres. These lamps are great for contemporary spaces, though they may look a bit out of place in more traditional spaces; so keep this in mind if you are struggling to choose the right lamps for your particular space.

The mirror finish does not have to be exactly like a mirror, either. While the silver look is the most popular, it is not the only option. There are clear gray versions with subtle mirrored patinas, bronze mirror finishes, gold mirror finishes and so forth. Keep an eye out for a hue that best suits your particular home decor style, as this will ensure the most cohesive look.

Of course, lamp bases are only half of the lamp. You’ll also need to find the right lamp shades, especially if the lamp does not already come with a predesignated lamp shade. With this in mind, there are two trendy looks for table lamps this year. The first is the more well-known drum shade, which is clean and contemporary, making it perfect to compliment a modern space. The next trendy look features a more slender elongated shape that is almost cylindrical in style, which may or may not feature a subtle tapering around the top.
If you’re looking for ways to update your home, then trendy new light fixtures might be the fix you’ve been needing. Mirror finishes are clean and stylish, which means you can use them for many years to come. Of course, they’re not for everyone so be sure that you’ve chosen the right lamps or other light fixtures to suit your space. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Unlike with interior design or fashion, trends that affect light fixtures tend to last significantly longer. In fact, light fixture trends can last upwards of several years before finally going out of style. With this in mind, many people are finding themselves drawn to fixtures they may not have considered for their space, particularly the chandelier. Within this particular category, there are actually a plethora of different trends: colored crystals, bright neon finishes and of course, the solid black chandelier. So, is the solid black chandelier trendy or trashy?
What is the Difference Between a Black Chandelier and a Regular Chandelier?

The main difference between these two light fixtures is actually minimal: it’s just the color of the finish! In fact, don’t be surprised to see manufacturers taking your favorite light fixtures and producing them with a new crisp black finish.

With that in mind, there are actually a few different varieties of black finishes for these ceiling light fixtures. The most popular of which tends to be a heavy lacquered black finish, which is extremely shiny and vibrant, drawing the eye up and adding to the dramatic affect of this light fixture. The next finish is a matte black finish, which is more subdued but equally elegant.

There are also clear acrylic chandeliers that feature a black tinting. These light fixtures tend to feature a laser cut pattern that mimics the look of a chandelier but gives it a more modern, up-to-date look.
All About Black Chandeliers

Black chandeliers come in a plethora of styles and shapes. They come in multiple tiered versions and versions that are more modern in style. There are clean lined versions and versions that mimic the traditional look. Either way, when you opt for a black chandelier, it tends to add a dramatic effect to any room you place it in.

Speaking of which, just like with any other light fixture, you can put a black finished chandelier in just about any space. This includes the living room, the bedroom and even the bathroom. Some people are even using these light fixtures in their walk-in closets, kitchen spaces and foyers.
Chandeliers are perhaps one of the trendiest light fixtures to hit home decor in years, so in terms of being trendy, the chandelier is in. However, it is up to you to decide if the black chandelier is classy or trashy. As with any look, this particular style may not be yours. If you are considering investing in a chandelier or any other light fixture like a pendant light, for your space, be sure to weigh the pros and cons as well as whether or not the light fixture will compliment your space. You should choose light fixtures you are drawn to, rather than basing your choices around what’s “trendy” and “in,” versus what isn’t. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
So what do you think? Trashy or Classy? Don’t forget to take a look at our great selection of wall lamps that will enhance your home.

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly light fixture, then you may want to consider using a reclaimed fixture such as the mason jar fixture. These fixtures are made using light kits and reclaimed mason jars, which actually come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Mason jar light fixtures are actually extremely versatile and thus, just one of many eco-friendly trends affecting light fixtures today.
Mason Jar Light Fixtures

These particular light fixtures fall under one of many different categories. The most popular of which tends to be eco-friendly. However, other popular categories include vintage, industrial, farmhouse and eclectic.
A plethora of different styles exist for the mason jar light fixture. There are mason jar chandeliers, mason jar pendant lights, mason jar table lamps, floor lamps and even mason jar wall sconces.

Mason jars themselves come in a number of different colors, which adds to their appeal. The most popular hues tend to be a turquoise blue and a clear glass, though other colors do exist. Other colors of authentic mason jars include red, yellow, green, purple, and peach.

Currently, mason jar light fixtures tend to be more popular with the do-it-yourself crowd as well as the green/eco-friendly crowd. This is because not only are they easy to make, they’re eco-friendly because you’re reusing a jar that is already in existence. However, with this in mind, there are a few select manufacturers that are producing mason jar light fixtures.
How to Care for Mason Jar Light Fixtures

Fortunately, mason jar light fixtures, whether they are in the form of a pendant light or wall sconce, are extremely easy to care for. To start, you should always dust your mason jar light fixtures on a regular basis. This could be weekly, bi-weekly or bi-monthly, depending on your personal dusting routine. Aside from dusting, since we typically wash mason jars with dish soap in the sink, you can actually continue washing them in this same manner.

However, this does not mean you should submerge your mason jar light fixtures in water! First, shut off power to the light fixture. Then, you’ll want to put a few drops of your dish soap into a container and add warm water. Shake well and spray a clean cloth with the mixture, then use the cloth to wipe down the light fixture. Again, never submerge the mason jar light fixture in water. The only time you can do this is if you can remove the mason jar entirely from the electrical portion of the light fixture.
Mason jars are surprisingly versatile, which makes them perfect for modern homes of today. They add a touch of whimsy and flair to any space that they are added to, which can be a much needed breath of fresh air.

Industrial style lighting can be difficult to work with. It is a style that while seemingly simple, does not necessarily always turn out the way we had hoped or planned. Industrial light fixtures are extremely trendy right now, but it can be difficult to find the right one for any given space or style. With this in mind, many are wondering if bare bulb light fixtures, in which there isn’t actually any “light fixture” present, are a better option.
Uses for Bare Bulb Light Fixtures

The most popular use of bare bulb light fixtures are pendant lights for the kitchen. This is because in a kitchen space, you want to have plenty of light to ensure you can go about your various kitchen (and non-kitchen) related tasks. Bare bulb pendant lights are clean and stylish, perfect for complimenting a variety of styles including contemporary, modern, industrial and rustic styled kitchens.
Occasionally, these pendant lights can feature a cage to add some visual weight to the light fixture. In these instances, they are no longer classified as bare bulb light fixtures, but caged pendant lights or lantern style pendant lights.

Of course, the kitchen isn’t the only location that you can use a bare bulb pendant light. Another popular locations include flanking either side of a bathroom mirror, which creates the desirable cross illumination lighting that is perfect for applying makeup or styling your hair. Other locations include in the place of table lamps on either side of a bed or sofa, in place of a chandelier over a dining table, in foyers, in closets and even in small but modern bathroom spaces.
Different Light Bulbs, Different Looks

It is worth noting that bare bulb light fixtures can actually feature different shaped light bulbs to create more visual interest. Aside from the standard incandescent shape, there are also elongated bulbs, globe shaped bulbs, candelabra style bulbs and more historically influenced styles and shapes that can vary in name based on the manufacturer or retailer.
How to Clean a Bare Bulb Light Fixture

Bare bulb light fixtures can be a bit more tricky to clean. As always, you’ll want to shut the light off and allow the bulb to cool fully before beginning any cleaning. Once the bulb is clean, you can dust it using a standard duster. If the grime and dirt has built up to a point where standard dusting does not remove it, you may need to use a damp cloth (with water only) to remove dust around the glass portion of the bulb. Never touch the metal portions of the light fixture using the damp cloth, as this can cause damage.

Bare bulb light fixtures are a great way to add a unique flair to any space. As mentioned earlier, you can use them in just about any space and their simple style allows them to easily blend in with a variety of looks including modern, contemporary, rustic, industrial, farmhouse, vintage and many, many more. With light fixtures, trends tend to last significantly longer than with other elements of interior design or home decor. In 2012, not only will you see a surge in popularity for crystal light fixtures, you’ll also see a surge in popularity for specific fixtures, particularly with table lamps. Here’s the low down on crystal and crystal table lamps for your home.
What is Crystal?

Crystal is actually a type of glass, with the main difference between standard glass and crystal being that crystal contains lead. This is why crystal is also referred to as “leaded glass.” The exact percentage of lead that must be in the glass to qualify it as crystal will vary from country to country, so keep this in mind. For example, in the United States, it takes only 1% of lead to be present in order for the item to be classified as crystals. In the European Union, any item that contains a minimum of 4% lead is crystal, anything less and the item is still considered a glass.
Trendy Crystal Table Lamp Looks

One of the big trends for crystal table lamps is the use of stacked spheres for the lamp base. This can be done with three, four or five large spheres or several, upwards of 10 or more, smaller spheres, to create a more slender and elegant look. The crystal is typically complimented by a silver or brushed nickel finish that gives the light fixture a clean look and a drum shade adds to the contemporary flair.

Another trend to look out for is a table lamp design which comes with a modernistic simplicity. This lamp, for example, is made from a single piece of handblown glass that allows views into its inside and shows the bulb as well as the socket with its cable! Very simple, but stylish and genius.
How to Care for Crystal Table Lamps

Just as with any light fixture you own, there are a few things you should do to take care and properly maintain your crystal table lamps. To start, always use a lint free cloth to wipe off the dust and debris from your crystal. Do not use a standard wash cloth or even paper towel, as these can cause small scratches that over time, will become more visible to the eye. These scratches will also diminish the “crystal clear” appearance of your table lamps.

Once you’ve removed any dust and debris, you can use a clean lint free cloth that has been dampened with warm water to wash and thoroughly clean the rest of your light fixture. If you have allowed dust to build up for a significant period of time, you may need to invest in a crystal cleaner that is safe to use on your crystal table lamps.
Crystal table lamps do feature an elegant and sculptural look. They come in a plethora of types including lamps, ceiling fixtures such as chandeliers, wall sconces and many more. This makes this particular trend an easy addition to a variety of spaces. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Slim lines are in when it comes to light fixtures on the market for 2012. These light fixtures are clean and stylish, perfect for complimenting a variety of styles or rooms. They also come in a number of different looks from pendant lights to wall sconces, table lamps to ceiling fixtures and so forth. Here’s the low down on slim lined light fixtures for 2012.
All About Slim Lined Light Fixtures

Slim is in, especially when it comes to light fixtures. In 2012, expect to see a small surge in light fixtures that feature clean lines and slim looks. The reason for the popularity is simple!
If you’ve got a small space and you’re like many urban dwellers, you want to savor every inch of your home. With this in mind, you’re probably always on the look-out for items that will actually fit into your home. Slim lined light fixtures are a perfect fit, every time, everywhere. With this in mind, slim lined light fixtures can even make a small room look and feel bigger.
Furthermore, slim lined light fixtures are visually appealing. They’re clean and modern, which is perfect for the contemporary style of many homes today. They also come in a number of different shapes and styles, so even if contemporary isn’t your thing, there’s a thin lined light fixture to suit your needs.

Just about any light fixture will come in a slim lined version in the next few months, especially as they grow steadily in popularity. Keep an eye out for slim lined table and floor lamps, ceiling lights, pendant lights, track lights and more.
Slim Lined Light Fixtures: What To Look For

With slim lined light fixtures, you’re looking for exactly that: slim lines. It is important to remember that “slim lines” does not necessarily always translate into a small lighting fixtures. After all, a large chandelier can feature many slim lines and still suit this particular trend.

With these light fixtures, you want to opt for one of two looks for the finish: a silver tone or a warm oil rubbed bronze tone. Silver tones, such as brushed nickel or aluminum, compliment the modern look and clean lines. Oil rubbed bronze tones, on the other hand, are trendy and can add a warm touch to the light fixture.

Finally, you’ll want to pay attention to the actual lines of the light fixture. Obviously the line should be slim in style and size, but they don’t necessarily have to be straight. Soft curves, exaggerated curves, hard angles, all of these are acceptable with this style. However, the most popular looks will be straight lines and lines that are more fluid or organic in appearance.
Slim lined light fixtures will compliment a variety of spaces, so don’t be afraid to incorporate one into your own space. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

This post is written by guest author, Tehmina, from Interior Design DIY, a blog that empowers you to improve your home and office space by sharing interior design and decor tips.
The kitchen is the heart of any home and the design process requires plenty of planning. One way to create successful kitchen lighting is to have a balanced interplay of several different lighting types, which in return enhances your home décor. In this post I’ll be giving away a few tips on acquiring the perfect kitchen lighting for your humble abode.

The ideal kitchen should have a balance between practicality and functionality with touches of beauty and form. Lighting plays an important role in creating a comfortable environment; it allows the chef to feel relaxed while he/she spends a considerable part of their day planning and preparing meals.
Types of Kitchen Light

There are three basic types of lighting – general, task, and decorative. Like any other room, the kitchen needs a good level of general lighting that produces the overall illumination. An ideal choice for general lighting would be light fixtures that are close to the ceiling with a flush or semi flush mount allowing ambient light throughout the entire room.

Task lights (utilitarian lights) have the distinct purpose of complementing the function of the kitchen. These are intended to aid specific kitchen-related activities such as cooking, washing, and eating. Direct lights, also known as focused lights, cast a downward beam that sets focus to a specific area. For example, food preparation, most often carried out on the counter-top, is facilitated by under cabinet lights that shine downward and are not physically visible allowing for a more pleasurable appearance to your kitchen.

Lastly, decorative lights help set the ambiance of the kitchen and add to the form of the room. The beauty of dining tables is greatly enhanced using decorative lights that radiate a warm and welcoming glow.
There is certainly a great collaboration between theses lights – the dining area will probably borrow general light from the work area, while direct lights should be combined with other types of lighting as they do not provide sufficient general illumination. Spotlights can also be easily directed to the most flattering positions of an object, allowing you to showcase impressive items in your kitchen.
A dimmer switch will also help mix and match these lights. It can be used both for a decorative effect and for practical purposes. To understand this point, remember that nobody likes to eat in a dark gloomy environment but one may wish to sometimes dim the lights when eating a midnight snack. A dimmer switch or a rise-and-fall lamp can help control the softness of the light. Remember that a carefully planned combination of lights in the kitchen can help freshen up the ambiance.
Source of Kitchen Light

When it comes to choosing the source of light, the starting place for a designer should be in maximizing the use of natural lighting. Although you cannot control the direction of natural light in a kitchen, your priority should be to position the sink in a sunny area. If, say, your kitchen faces away from the sun, you could always increase the inflow of natural light by installing a skylight or by making a larger kitchen window. Images 1| 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

The kitchen is perhaps one of the most important spaces in the entire home. For the modern American family, the kitchen is the hub, it’s the heart of the home. Food is prepped there, perhaps homework is done or even entertaining depending on the layout of the home. With this in mind, it’s important to have proper lighting. However, lighting is an area where you can easily follow trends. For 2012 and beyond, expect to see an increase in hanging lanterns and lantern style light fixtures in the kitchen.

The key with this particular trend is to focus on the actual style. Lanterns come in all kinds of styles, shapes and sizes. With that in mind, the traditional lantern shape is most popular and also the most trendy. However, rounded versions are also making the rounds in popularity, as the softer, organic shape compliments a number of kitchen styles.

Nautical looks are also extremely trendy in terms of home decor for 2012. You may want to consider seeking out nautically inspired hanging lanterns, which will also compliment a variety of kitchen decors.

Another popular look is the globe shaped caged look. These particular hanging lanterns came come with or without a glass shield, though the majority do not. They also tend to have a more rustic or industrial appeal them, which is great for adding a subtle rustic/industrial influence to a contemporary, modern or traditional kitchen space.
For finishes, consider warmer tones such as an oil rubbed bronze. Bronzes in general are going to be very trendy in terms of finishes not only for light fixtures, but also for kitchen faucets; so this is a great way to tie your kitchen space together.

It goes without saying that there are also paper hanging lanterns, particularly the spherical ones that feature an Asian influence. It is important to note that these particular light fixtures are not ideal for lighting a kitchen space and are better suited for backyard barbecues.
When it comes to light fixtures, trends tend to stick around longer than with other interior design trends. So don’t be afraid to invest in a somewhat trendy pendant light. Lanterns in general have been around for several years, so they’re not likely to go out of style any time soon. This makes them a great choice for incorporating into your kitchen space.

When choosing a lantern, be sure to choose one that compliments the style of your kitchen but also suits your lighting needs. Don’t be afraid to combine multiple hanging lanterns to ensure you’ve got ample lighting in your kitchen space. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
Do you think you are ready to play with different lantern styles? Consider our great selection of lighting fixtures to help you achieve the look you desire.

The skilled designers work closely with clients to provide highly personalized spaces that reach the full potential of their clients’ vision. Pol G. Theis, founder of P&T Interiors believes a great design is the culmination of a tri-party relationship between a designer, a client and the space. His role is to translate the client’s lifestyle and taste into their space while incorporating innovative and unique style approaches.
One of P&T’s standout designs is their loft residence project, located in Manhattan’s hip Meatpacking District. Located in an original building structure, the design embraces the neighborhood’s history as being a heavy commercial and manufacturing district. The industrial-chic space features 14-foot high ceilings, which allowed for a diverse landscape of heights for the designers to work with. With a strikingly contemporary feel, the materials used throughout are simple and refined. Rich woods and slate stone slabs give the loft an atmosphere of coziness, and ground it in an overall lofty feel. The 950 square foot space is a highly livable industrial dwelling, with all comforts of an apartment. Take a look at the innovative design below:

The loft entrance gives way to rich hardwood flooring, and a stairwell with a glass enclosure. The wood paneling continues to the high ceiling in columns.

The contemporary kitchen design features a sleek granite counter-top and rustic wooden decor. Industrial-chic pendant lights are timeless and add character to the space.

The nature-inspired master bedroom is packed with personality. Large animal art, hanging ram heads, and a faux leopard skin give this room a masculine feel. A small lamp provides subtle light for intimate evenings.

The doll wall is a surreal expression of artistic taste. Paying homage to the manufacturing district, dozens of nude baby dolls make a bold statement in the dining area.

The living room features large portraits of royalty, along with a stylish purple suede couch. The coffee table is made of a salvaged cart, complete with rustic wheels. Doll legs are encased in mason jars, adding industrial flair and artistic edge to the room.

The Powder Room features an over-sized farmhouse sink, with sleek wooden slabs against a modern wall design.
