Modern Chandeliers: Glass Globe Chandeliers

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Light fixtures are easy to swap out, so it’s a great idea to add a little trendy style to your space through new light fixtures, especially a chandelier. Though these pieces can get a bit pricey, if you’re willing, there are a number of reproductions of higher end designer pieces out there that can help you cut costs while still giving you the same look and feel as a high end designer light fixture. Glass globe chandeliers, as well as glass globe pendants and other fixtures that use this style, are becoming extremely trendy.

Cluster Chandeliers

Cluster Chandeliers

An elegant, but simple design, cluster chandeliers are a great choice for anyone who is looking to incorporate this light fixture trend into their home. These ceiling fixtures feature several clear (or colored) glass globes with individual lights, hung in a cluster. The wires are typically tied together or cased in a straight tube to give it a more clean, streamlined appearance.

These light fixtures come in a variety of sizes with a number of bulbs per fixture, so you can easily find one for your space. Plus, cluster glass globe chandeliers fit into a number of styles from contemporary to modern, traditional to rustic and everything in between. Their basic shape and design give them a look that is elegant, simple and easily blended with other decor styles.

Other cluster style chandeliers will feature each bulb on an individual wire, but the wires won’t be decoratively grouped but rather each one hangs down from a single point at the base of the light fixture. Like the grouped pieces, these can also easily be incorporated into a number of styles.

Suspension Style Glass Globe Chandeliers

Chaotic Chandeliers

Another popular option, the suspension style glass globe chandelier is any ceiling lighting fixture where the glass globe lights are suspended from their wires but are suspended in a pattern. The pattern can be a straight line or a chaotic-appearing grouping. They come in any size or pattern and like many glass globe chandeliers, they can feature colored glass globes, though clear tends to be the most popular. Furthermore, as expected, these ceiling fixtures can easily blend into a number of styles from Victorian to minimalist.

Other Types of Glass Globe Light Fixtures

Track Light Chandeliers

There are a plethora of other glass globe light fixtures available out there, so you can easily match your chosen chandelier to your pendant lights or other ceiling fixtures. Some manufacturers even produce lamps, track lights and wall sconces that feature glass globes for the shades.

Glass globe chandeliers are super trendy, especially in the coming year. That being said, investing in trendy light fixtures can get a bit pricey so don’t be afraid to opt for less expensive versions because these often feature the exact same look without the designer price tag. Since you can blend these ceiling fixtures with various decor styles, it’s easy for you to incorporate them into your space. Images 1 | 2| 3 | 4| 5

How to Make the Most of Wall Sconce Lighting

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Wall sconce lighting is a very attractive method of sprucing up a home, as wall sconces roll lighting and decorative purposes into one convenient package.

Actually, choosing and placing these sconces is not as easy as it first appears. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration, with some of the more important ones listed down here:

Location, location, location

The effectiveness of wall sconce lighting depends largely on where you put them, which is why you have to take its location in consideration even before you pick one out.

Will a sconce provide better lighting if it is soft and diffused or bright and directed? Will wall sconce lights that shine light upwards be better for the lounge or will the downward-pointing ones be better? Will the size and design of the sconces make them jut out of a hallway or recede discreetly? All these factors and a lot more can only be taken into consideration when compared to where the sconces will be placed.

Match the nearby décor

What a wall sconce is made of and what design it has will affect (and be affected by) the décor of the location.

The sterile, functional appeal of utility wall sconces will not work well when placed in a living room full of antiques. Likewise will Tiffany wall sconces be a bit out of place in a room full of modern and post-modern art? Look at how a room is designed and pick out a wall sconce that will fit with nearby décor. If you’re not sure what will work, then take a photo of the room and bring it along with you. This will make it easier to check what will and will not work in a room.

Consider the light from the bulb

There are many different kinds of light, especially if the light emanating from a sconce is affected by the bulb itself.

For example, picture lights with bright white light bulbs (such as LEDs) and picture lights with dull golden lights (such as incandescents and Xenon bulbs) can produce two very different effects in a room. The same can be said for light bulbs with different intensities of light. Do not fret too much, though, as light bulbs that have different intensities can easily be replaced, as long as the sockets support that type of bulb. Just make sure that you pick out the right light color, intensity, and compatibility of bulb and fixture in order to lessen the trips you have to make to the hardware store.

Factor in the effects of multiple light sources

The aesthetic value of wall sconce lighting is undeniable, but that aesthetic value can be improved or undermined by other sources of light such as recessed lighting or ceiling lights.

Of particular interest here is the blending of light and shadows. Overhead lamps will inevitably cancel out many of the beautiful shadows of wall sconces, while sunlight or streetlight coming in from a window could mess up the soft light of the sconces. Position the lights properly, though, and these other light sources can even complement the effects of wall sconces.

Keep all these tips in mind and you’ll be able to make the most out of wall sconce lighting!
